Via Earsplit PR: "In the wake of their recent and first full-on invasion of North America, revolutionary New Zealand death metal trio, ULCERATE, will return to the European continent this Fall.

ULCERATE today issues their warning that the Confronting Entropy European Tour MMXIV has been declared, the excursion bringing the band back to Europe on a massive trek set to run from November 21st through December 14th. Continuing to tour in support of their worldwide-acclaimed third full-length, Vermis, released in September through Relapse Records, on the upcoming twenty-four city raid ULCERATE will be paired with Spanish sci-fi death metal cult, Wormed, also supported by Gigan, Solace of Requiem and one more act to be confirmed. Additional info on this venture will be announced in the coming weeks.

The Confronting Entropy European Tour MMXIV follows ULCERATE’s previous runs in support of their acclaimed new album, most recently their Vermis North America MMXIV Tour which engulfed most of the month of May and led the band to one of the main indoor slots at this year’s Maryland Deathfest. While Vermis is an incredibly extreme, cerebral and devastatingly creative body of work in its own right, the band performs the new songs with unbelievable strength and seamless professionalism, the mere thee-piece lineup mesmerizing and devastating audiences with a relentless tsunami of cutting-edge, technical and overall supremely ominous attack."

Heavy Blog is Heavy

Ulcerate, one of our favorite (as well as possibly one of the only we know of?) bands from the wondrous land of New Zealand, recently wrapped up a string of shows in the US. Along the way they hit Saint Vitus in Brooklyn, and Nick Cusworth was there to capture them in all their furious glory. Better yet, he was able to use the power of GoPro to give us a better-than-front-row seat to one of the best drummers in the game currently, Jamie Saint Merat. Click through the jump to see videos from their entire set, including a few drum-cam-only playthroughs.

Vermis North America MMXIV tour

February 2014

In support of their most demoralizing recorded works to date with their fourth LP, Vermis, New Zealand death metal innovators, ULCERATE, will bring their audio terror to North American fans this Spring, on their second tour of the continent.

Sponsored by Metal Injection, ULCERATE will inundate the American and Canadian peoples for nineteen days and nights on the Vermis North America MMXIV tour, which will include the band’s first shows on the West Coast. Beginning the first day of May, the horde will bring their incredibly destructive, dynamic style of delivering the most extreme, cutting edge death metal imaginable to a clockwise arc of cities, the mayhem coming to a close with a performance at the massive, annual Maryland Death Fest on May 25th. Support for ULCERATE will be provided by Relapse lablemates, Inter Arma, on the majority of the dates, joining the tour in Philadelphia on the 9th and pushing through until May 21st, the final date of the tour before MDF.

Vermis North America MMXIV will be ULCERATE’s first return to the continent since their initial stateside mini-tour in 2012, culminated with their memorably punishing set at Maryland Deathfest that year. Stated the band on the upcoming live incursion, "After months of planning we are now in full lockdown mode with rehearsals for what is going to be one of the most intense tours we've done to date. We can't wait to bring the Vermis material to life and finally attack both East and West coasts of the continent - particularly with Inter Arma joining us for the second half of the run."

Necessarily Loud - 50 Essential Heavy Albums From 2013

November 2013

Via Steel for Brains:
http://www.steelforbrains.com/post/68063595979/necessarily-loud-2013

Between Gorguts’ Colored Sands and Ulcerate’s Vermis, technical death metal raised the stakes considerably in 2013 for any contenders or pretenders in the years to come. Where Gorguts (among others) might look at their songs as a virtuosic undertaking rightfully devoid of any organic meanderings, Ulcerate give their music an autonomy while still holding together the scorching technical prowess of their associated genre. Vermis shows a band who, with this their fourth full length, have discovered the inherent value of instinct over influence as the songs here, while inarguably razor sharp and death metal of the most unrelenting variety, are not tethered to any one notion of what death metal or technical death metal should be. This less restrictive approach to their songwriting and deadly precise focus is precisely what makes Vermis an easy pick for one of 2013’s essential heavy releases...

Weight of Emptiness: via Loudwire

When it comes to Ulcerate, we’ve gotta talk about tone. With each release, Ulcerate’s production standards change slightly, but the filth-ridden atmosphere created by Michael Hoggard’s guitar tone is truly unique. The blackness and hopeless abandonment of floating through space combines with the crushing force of a black hole to form Ulcerate’s sound — a sound which continues throughout the entire ‘Vermis’ album.

Ulcerate is truly one of the heaviest, most atmospheric and precise death metal bands in the world. If you’re feeling a sonic need to have your head both engaged and crushed in at the same time, take a listen to Ulcerate’s new track ‘Weight of Emptiness’ in the player below.

Vermis In-Studio

July 2013

Via Earsplit Compound:

"Following the recent unveiling of the details on ULCERATE’s impending and highly anticipated fourth LP Vermis, today Relapse has leaked an in-studio video with the Auckland, New Zealand tribe as they meticulously crafted the mammoth album at hometown MCA Studios earlier this year. The combined demolishing power and technical prowess of the music the trio creates is truly jaw-dropping on every one of the band’s releases to date, and watching them hone and construct these anguished hymns piece-by-piece is enthralling for any extreme music musician or ULCERATE devotee."

"After signing ULCERATE last year, new label Relapse unveils the info on the band’s newest works as the album nears release late this Summer. After a year of writing and planning, the creation of the record came to fruition in March of this year when the band entered hometown MCA Studios. The nine passages harnessed during these sessions culminates into a nearly fifty-five minute document of the outfit’s most tumultuous craftsmanship yet, entitled Vermis. Relapse will unleash the album on CD, double LP and digitally, now confirmed for release September 17th in North America, preceded by September 13th in Germany and Benelux, and September 16th in the UK and rest of the world. Preorders have been made available here."

"Additional propaganda, hymns and more on Vermis will be announced in the coming weeks in addition to new ULCERATE tour actions for 2013."

Album #4

October 2012

Thanks to all who came out and who were involved in our last run of Australian shows, especially Départe and Odiusembowel for supporting on multiple dates. For those interested we have a small amount of leftover shirts from the tour, available via the store.

These shows were our last for the year, and we now climb head-first into completing work on our fourth album. At this point we have been writing since March, and so far have completed 4 tracks, close to 35 minutes worth of music. We're exploring a lot of new territory with this material and so far everything is sounding a lot violent/uglier than past releases, as well as more rhythmically involved than The Destroyers of All.

The lineup will of course be the same as the last 2 albums - Kelland/Hoggard/Saint Merat.

Burning Winter European Tour 2012

December 2011

We're very proud to announce our European tour with our good friends Svart Crown, press release below:

New Zealand’s unorthodox death metallers ULCERATE have announced a three-week headlining European tour in the winter of 2012 in support of their critically acclaimed new album, The Destroyers of All. The tour will kick off on February 2nd in Reims, France and continue through February 25th in Ludwigshafen, Germany. Direct support throughout the tour will be provided by French blackened death metal masters, Svart Crown.

Ulcerate + Relapse Records

November 2011

Relapse Records is extremely proud to announce the signing of New Zealand progressive death metallers Ulcerate.

Ulcerate (Paul Kelland: Bass/vocals, Michael Hoggard: Guitars, William Cleverdon: Guitars, and Jamie Saint Merat: Drums) formed in 2000 and has previously released three full-length albums. The band's latest album, The Destroyers of All, was released earlier this year and received international critical acclaim for its blend of ambitious songwriting and unorthodox extremity. Ulcerate will enter the studio next fall to begin recording their Relapse debut.

Ulcerate's Jamie Saint Merat commented on the signing and the band's upcoming tour dates: "Working with Relapse is a very logical next step for us, and we're really looking forward to the partnership. Their presence of quality releases regardless of genre, overarching aesthetic and attention to detail is something that we find very natural to align with, as well as being fans of the label's releases well before the band was even started. In terms of what's next for the Ulcerate, 2012 will be a big year for us - in February we're touring Europe for 23 dates with our good friends in Svart Crown, followed up by MDF X and accompanying side-shows in the US in May, New Zealand shows in December (2011) and January, and a tentative return to Australia mid-year. We'll also begin work on album number 4."

European tour dates will be announced shortly. There are a handful of unconfirmed dates - interested promoters can contact sons-of-underground@hotmail.fr.

"New Zealand death metallers Ulcerate couldn’t have thought up a better title for their third full-length studio album, The Destroyers of All. Put quite simply, The Destroyers of All impales aardvark babies.

Never before have blast beats been played so viciously behind a band that’s playing so slow — in death metal no less, where speed is usually the name of the game — but Ulcerate skinsman Jamie Saint Merat does just that to set the backbone for the woeful yet delicate crushing which the rest of the band bestows upon the world. Atmospherics and dissonance are the strongest tools in the arsenal of guitarist Michael Hoggard instead of speed and agility. The result is a unique brand of death metal that’s creepy, doomy and jarring instead of groovy and energetic. Not that there’s anything wrong with the latter, but the former are what make Ulcerate worthy of your attention; no one else sounds like them, and they’re heavy in a truly new way."

Album preview

October 2010

The Destroyers of All

'Ulcerate will release their third full-length album The Destroyers of All on January 25 2011 through Willowtip Records. Ambitious, oppressive and expansive, with a strict adherence to the tradition of total bleakness the band is becoming known for, The Destroyers of All presents the most atmospheric and challenging listen from the band to date.'

Tracklisting:
I. Burning Skies [7:34]
II. Dead Oceans [7:01]
III. Cold Becoming [6:16]
IV. Beneath [6:56]
V. The Hollow Idols [6:06]
VI. Omens [8:26]
VII. The Destroyers of All [10:30]

"Come dawn, no light will be thrown on them
This vermin, these ingrates
Us of the earth
The destroyers of all"

In other news, we have reached a decision recently to part ways with live second guitarist Oliver Goater, although we are of course gracious for his work with us over the past 2 years. The album will be released as the core 3 writing members - we have however been working with a new live second guitarist, William Cleverdon - who is already proving to be an outstanding addition to the line-up. Live shows will commence in 2011.

Album #3

April 2010

Since the start of this year we've been hard at work writing material for the next album, finally feels like it's time to start talking about it. So far we've got 5 fully complete tracks, with an aim to have the writing completed by July/August, when we'll step into the studio for real. We will be continuing with Willowtip Records / Candlelight for this release yet again, as they've done a superb job with Everything is Fire.

The writing process is once again being handled by guitarist Michael and myself, with vocalist/bassist Paul handling all lyrical and vocal contributions. We have no working titles as yet, but in the coming weeks everything will start falling into place.

The new material is an expansion on the Everything is Fire sound with a far greater dynamic range. There's really no surprises or annoying experimentations, just the next step forward in evolving what we've established so far. There will however be a lot more of the bleak and blackened atmosphere and mood, perhaps a little less pace overall - with an emphasis on a very very large sound. We're certainly not a band that wants to repeat itself, but at the same time, we're extremely driven to create the sonic assault that we've had in our heads for a number of years. Make of that what you will!

Pre-production sessions have been taking place and we've got a number of ideas that we'll be experimenting with in the very near future in terms of instrument tones and production values. The production will once again be handled within the band, and there may or may not be outside contributors. What you can expect yet again is a (hopefully) very natural sound, with little or no reliance on modern production gimmicks / techniques.

Beyond this, we will be looking to tour locally and internationally early 2011 in support of the release.

More updates as they come to pass.
Cheers / Jamie
