Album #4
October 2012
Thanks to all who came out and who were involved in our last run of Australian shows, especially Départe and Odiusembowel for supporting on multiple dates. For those interested we have a small amount of leftover shirts from the tour,
available via the store.
These shows were our last for the year, and we now climb head-first into completing work on our fourth album. At this point we have been writing since March, and so far have completed 4 tracks, close to 35 minutes worth of music. We're exploring a lot of new territory with this material and so far everything is sounding a lot violent/uglier than past releases, as well as more rhythmically involved than
The Destroyers of All.
The lineup will of course be the same as the last 2 albums - Kelland/Hoggard/Saint Merat.

Burning Winter European Tour 2012
December 2011

We're very proud to announce our European tour with our good friends Svart Crown, press release below:
New Zealand’s unorthodox death metallers ULCERATE have announced a three-week headlining European tour in the winter of 2012 in support of their critically acclaimed new album, The Destroyers of All. The tour will kick off on February 2nd in Reims, France and continue through February 25th in Ludwigshafen, Germany. Direct support throughout the tour will be provided by French blackened death metal masters, Svart Crown.
Ulcerate + Relapse Records
November 2011
Relapse Records is extremely proud to announce the signing of New Zealand progressive death metallers Ulcerate.
Ulcerate (Paul Kelland: Bass/vocals, Michael Hoggard: Guitars, William Cleverdon: Guitars, and Jamie Saint Merat: Drums) formed in 2000 and has previously released three full-length albums. The band's latest album, The Destroyers of All, was released earlier this year and received international critical acclaim for its blend of ambitious songwriting and unorthodox extremity. Ulcerate will enter the studio next fall to begin recording their Relapse debut.
Ulcerate's Jamie Saint Merat commented on the signing and the band's upcoming tour dates: "Working with Relapse is a very logical next step for us, and we're really looking forward to the partnership. Their presence of quality releases regardless of genre, overarching aesthetic and attention to detail is something that we find very natural to align with, as well as being fans of the label's releases well before the band was even started. In terms of what's next for the Ulcerate, 2012 will be a big year for us - in February we're touring Europe for 23 dates with our good friends in Svart Crown, followed up by MDF X and accompanying side-shows in the US in May, New Zealand shows in December (2011) and January, and a tentative return to Australia mid-year. We'll also begin work on album number 4."
European tour dates will be announced shortly. There are a handful of unconfirmed dates - interested promoters can contact
sons-of-underground@hotmail.fr.

Europe
September 2011
Just a small update regarding Ulcerate in Europe this year... Although un-announced, we were originally part of the Immolation/Krisiun tour scheduled for November/December of this year - this has since been postponed to May of next year, which unfortunately makes it impossible for us. There is however something being planned that may see us in Europe in February of next year, details to come once things are a little more solidified.

As a sidenote, it feels only appropriate to officially welcome our second guitarist William Cleverdon to the fray, who we've been playing with for just over a year now.

"New Zealand death metallers Ulcerate couldn’t have thought up a better title for their third full-length studio album, The Destroyers of All. Put quite simply, The Destroyers of All impales aardvark babies.
Never before have blast beats been played so viciously behind a band that’s playing so slow — in death metal no less, where speed is usually the name of the game — but Ulcerate skinsman Jamie Saint Merat does just that to set the backbone for the woeful yet delicate crushing which the rest of the band bestows upon the world. Atmospherics and dissonance are the strongest tools in the arsenal of guitarist Michael Hoggard instead of speed and agility. The result is a unique brand of death metal that’s creepy, doomy and jarring instead of groovy and energetic. Not that there’s anything wrong with the latter, but the former are what make Ulcerate worthy of your attention; no one else sounds like them, and they’re heavy in a truly new way."
Album preview
October 2010
'Ulcerate will release their third full-length album The Destroyers of All on January 25 2011 through Willowtip Records. Ambitious, oppressive and expansive, with a strict adherence to the tradition of total bleakness the band is becoming known for, The Destroyers of All presents the most atmospheric and challenging listen from the band to date.'
Tracklisting:
I. Burning Skies [7:34]
II. Dead Oceans [7:01]
III. Cold Becoming [6:16]
IV. Beneath [6:56]
V. The Hollow Idols [6:06]
VI. Omens [8:26]

"Come dawn, no light will be thrown on them
This vermin, these ingrates
Us of the earth
The destroyers of all"
In other news, we have reached a decision recently to part ways with live second guitarist Oliver Goater, although we are of course gracious for his work with us over the past 2 years. The album will be released as the core 3 writing members - we have however been working with a new live second guitarist, William Cleverdon - who is already proving to be an outstanding addition to the line-up. Live shows will commence in 2011.

Album #3
April 2010
Since the start of this year we've been hard at work writing material for the next album, finally feels like it's time to start talking about it. So far we've got 5 fully complete tracks, with an aim to have the writing completed by July/August, when we'll step into the studio for real. We will be continuing with
Willowtip Records /
Candlelight for this release yet again, as they've done a superb job with
Everything is Fire.
The writing process is once again being handled by guitarist Michael and myself, with vocalist/bassist Paul handling all lyrical and vocal contributions. We have no working titles as yet, but in the coming weeks everything will start falling into place.
The new material is an expansion on the
Everything is Fire sound with a far greater dynamic range. There's really no surprises or annoying experimentations, just the next step forward in evolving what we've established so far. There will however be a lot more of the bleak and blackened atmosphere and mood, perhaps a little less pace overall - with an emphasis on a very very large sound. We're certainly not a band that wants to repeat itself, but at the same time, we're extremely driven to create the sonic assault that we've had in our heads for a number of years. Make of that what you will!
Pre-production sessions have been taking place and we've got a number of ideas that we'll be experimenting with in the very near future in terms of instrument tones and production values. The production will once again be handled within the band, and there may or may not be outside contributors. What you can expect yet again is a (hopefully) very natural sound, with little or no reliance on modern production gimmicks / techniques.
Beyond this, we will be looking to tour locally and internationally early 2011 in support of the release.
More updates as they come to pass.
Cheers / Jamie

Final words for 2009
December 2009
Firstly, a huge thankyou to all in Europe who made an effort to watch us do our thing over the past month, we appreciate the support! We also have to put in a huge collective thanks to all in Nile, Krisiun, Grave, Corpus Mortale and Hackneyed for being such awesome tour partners. And to all the Massive Music crew - Darek, Fabricio, Vacek, Kuba, Michael, Brovar - cheers for being consummate professionals and making our lives a whole lot easier!

In other news Ulcerate will be touring Australia in February 2010 with grind act
Beyond Terror Beyond Grace as main support, poster left, and details to the right...
We also have a limited supply of the '
Tyranny' shirt as leftover tour stock. We will be reprinting both this design and the '
Drown Within' design in a matter of weeks, all available in the
Store section.
And finally, we will begin the writing for album #3 in the coming weeks. Pointless at this stage to give any solid indications of where we will be heading with the material, but naturally it will be a continuation of the strongest points of
Everything is Fire.

We at Terrorizer like to shout about good music from time to time, so when we heard Ulcerate's new album, 'Everything Is Fire', come dripping out of the stereo speakers, office cronies subsequently lost their shit and we simply had to tell all you guys!
This is Ulcerate's second full album, their first being 'Of Fracture And Failure' which came out courtesy of Neurotic Records/Willowtip in 2007 - In 2009 they are brought to you via Willowtip/Candlelight.
Formed in 2002, this band have had more lineups than Baltimore Police Department, though current members Jamie Saint Merat on drums and Michael Hoggard on guitars remain from the original squad, back when the band was named Bloodwreath in 2000-2001.
There is no argument, these guys can play; the album is as honest and organic as death metal gets, it's superbly produced and well structured, combining the sounds of latterday Hate Eternal with the horrific and cavernous atmospherics of Deathspell Omega or Portal. But you can hear that for yourselves right?
...So brace yourself, dear listener, for a sonic beating of the highest order, Ulcerate are toxic and terrifying, defining the word 'brutal' without having to shove it in your face..

ULCERATE SIGNS TO WILLOWTIP
August 2008

"
Willowtip Records is very pleased to welcome New Zealand's Ulcerate to their official roster.
Drummer Jamie Saint Merat comments on the signing: "Ulcerate is really looking forward to calling Willowtip home, a label we've respected for a long time, and whose reputation for quality bands and quality service is something we really identify with. It feels great to have their support and backing!"
Ulcerate is currently in pre-production for their forthcoming album,
Everything Is Fire. A seething, more emotionally darker album than
Of Fracture and Failure,
Everything Is Fire is more extensively orchestrated and rhythmically complex, coupling suffocating density with moments of serene bleakness. Bassist Paul Kelland will handle vocal duties this time around, and the album will be mastered by Peter In de Betou (Nasum, Meshuggah, Watain) in Sweden.
Everything Is Fire will be released in early 2009."
The line-up for Everything is Fire is:
Jamie Saint Merat - Drums
Michael Hoggard - Guitars
Paul Kelland - Bass/Vocals
Album pre-production
May 2008
Ulcerate is hard at work on album 2 at the moment, 5 songs written so far... We're kicking around a tentative title, but at this stage everything will be kept under wraps. Expect an extension on the harmonic and rhythmic ideas presented on 'Of Fracture and Failure' with a much broader palette in terms of dynamics and structure. We're also pushing for a more bleak, blacker tonality overall - and this will be mirrored by the lyrics, vocals and art.
We are also officially no longer working with vocalist Ben Read - the last few months he has been filling the role of live vocalist, and this will come to an end with a final performance this June. Naturally, his work so far has been exceptional in execution, but for this next chapter in our evolution we're needing to look at a different sound. At this stage, bassist Paul Kelland will be handling all lyric work and album vocals, and we are still on the hunt for someone who will be able to convey what we need on a live performance basis.
Pre-production is in full swing for the album, we'll be throwing up snippets of video to check out as we go - so far we've got some raw, unmixed drum takes up...
